This Month's Free Soup Recipe and Pattern Corrections

The recipe this time is for Tomato Florentine Soup and was given to me by Ruth Evans. We usually have garden tomatoes coming out of ears at this time of the year but the deer ate them all. Wonder if they will share a recipe or two?

TOMATO FLORENTINE SOUP from the kitchen of Ruth Evans

2 T veg oil
1 cup chopped onion
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
½ tsp dried thyme
½ tsp dried basil
¼ tsp fresh ground pepper
¼ tsp salt
¼ cup red wine
8 cups chicken broth
2 – 14 oz cans chopped tomatoes
1 – 12 oz can tomato paste
1 – 10 oz package frozen chopped spinach (thawed & drained)
1 T balsamic vinegar
Grated Fresh Parmesan Cheese

Heat oil, add onion & garlic, stir in seasonings & sauté for few minutes. Deglaze pan with red wine.  Add rest of ingredients except vinegar and cheese.  Simmer for 10 minutes.  Turn off heat, add vinegar and serve with grated cheese

Pattern corrections:

We regret we have to make corrections and are sorry for any inconvenience.

Hip Holdays Cutting Clarification:

  • Dianne Miller writes: In the cream pindot cutting, under tree backgrounds, if the rectangles are cut diagonally in the manner shown, won't you end up with two triangles in the same orientation? In other words, you will have two triangles that fit on the left edge of the tree and no triangles for the right side.

  • Our response: I am assuming that people will cut the rectangles with the fabric folded in half as it comes of the bolt which makes a duplicate pair of rectangles in the opposing direction. Then you mix and match the pairs to get the orientation needed. Folks might want to cut 8 of these rectangles (4 pair) and one will go to waste.

Seed Collectors:

  1. The assembly instructions for the border below the flowers should read “Sew black 2 1/2" x 3 1/4" between the blue plaid and then sew a black 2 /12" x 3 1/2" strip to both ends”. The cutting is correct as given.
  2. Which leaf patterns should I use for leaves in basket panel? We used “right top” for leaf on right and “right top reversed” for leaf on left.

Parisian Pastries Correction 1

Please change the cutting for the log cabin block to read as follows:
Brown small dot. Cut strips for sides of log cabin block at 5 1/2”. Then cut into rectangles 2” x 5 1/2”. The pattern says 2 1/2” x 5 1/2” but it should b 2” x 5 1/2”. Likewise for the 2" x 8 1/2" strip

Doll Babies:

The Blue Cherries Print yardage requirement should be 3/4 yard (not 1/2 yard)

• • • • •

Bad Dad:

Candy Brown writes that we should say cut 12 pieced blocks instead of 6. She is absolutely right!! You will not be short on yardage because there are approx 42 10 squares in the layer cake used for this quilt and we got the whole quilt from one layer cake.

Meredith writes that she was confused about what size the vehicle borders are finally trimmed to. They are trimmed to 9-1/2” x 41-1/2 after the vehicles are sewn to the black 2-1/2” “road” strip. The pattern says these are 11-1/2” wide.  Change that to 9-1/2” wide please. Hope that clears it up.

Corner Flower Shoppe pattern update:

Cut (8) not (12) 5” squares of pink dot for flower heads
Cut (12) not (8) 5” squares of raspberry print for flowers heads
Stem Leaf unit. The piecing instructions say that the completed unit measures 6 1/2” x
12 1/2”. It should say 6 1/2” x 9 1/2”

We thank Laurette Mortensen for the following note:
 Page 3 under 3.Stem/leaf unit.
Sew 1 3/4 x 6 1/2 stem between two white 4 3/8x 6 1/2...Unit measures 6 1/2 x 12 1/2 at this time.  It should say 6 1/2 x 9 1/2.

We also thank Kathy Burns for a correction:
Page 3, 4. Last line in the instructions read:  For top and bottom border, sew a 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" large green dotted rectangle to both ends of 2 rows.  It should read 5 1/2" x
8 1/2".

And please change the cutting for the lime green/turquoise stripe to read “ Cut (2) 9 1/2” x wof strips. From these, cut (12) 5 1/2” x 9 1/2” for awning.

We thank Eli Bailey at Prairie Queens Quilt Shop for the following corrections to our Sunny Disposition pattern.

Sunny Disposition:

  1. Cutting: There is no mention of the Red Cameo in the cutting directions. The red cameo is for the tree trunks. The pattern is included on the appliqué sheets.
  2. Green Paisley – The instructions say to cut (4) 3 5/16” strips for trees. Instead, please cut (5) 3 5/16” strips.
  3. Instructions: Tree canopies. Make two strip sets using 4 of the strips per set. From these two strip sets, cut (24) 3 5/16 sections. This will give you enough to make all four tree canopies.
  4. There are no directions for making the nine-patch block with the red polka dot.
    1. Directions: Sew together one each of the light green floral and one strip of the green paisley. Press toward light green floral. Cut (8) 3 15/16” units.
    2. Cut remaining light green floral strip into (8) 3 15/16” squares.
    3. Make nine-patch block by attaching a red polka dot square to the light green floral end of the strip set unit. Make 8. Press toward light green floral.
    4. Sew two light green floral blocks to the ends of a red polka dot square. Make 4. Press toward light green floral.
    5. Sew block into a nine patch
